Louis Cole is a rocket engine in this incredible live jam with the German WDR big band led by tenor sax master Bob Mintzer.

“Gotta Be Another Way” (composed by Genevieve Artadi and Louis Cole) is one of the earlier compositions of the independent electronic music duo “KNOWER”. WDR BIG BAND chief conductor Bob Mintzer wrote a fresh big band arrangement, featuring Bob Mintzer on tenor saxophone and Johan Hörlén on alto saxophone.

This video was produced at the rehearsal in May 2019 at the WDR Funkhaus Studio 4 in Cologne, Germany.

Evangelical Christian Twitter has been shook up today by a statement from one Josh Harris, author of the courtship-promoting “I Kissed Dating Goodbye,” that he’d pretty much lost his faith. This came hot on the heels of a statement last week by his wife that they were separating.

The reaction from some quarters was typical. In the time honored Evangelical Christian fashion of shooting the wounded, a prominent Calvinist preacher quoted 1 John 2:19, which basically says, “they are no longer a part of us, but they never really were part of us.” In other words, Harris wasn’t really saved. There was also a lot of pitying dreck without understanding.

A couple of things more to know about Harris. He wrote the book when he was 20 and 21, and it was published when he was 22. He didn’t court his wife, he dated her (contrary to the book). And while still very young, he was named the pastor of Covenant Life Church, a large Sovereign Grace church in Maryland, a church that had sexual abuse coverups. (Name of church has changed, Harris is no longer the pastor, and it’s no longer part of Sovereign Grace.)

Keeping those facts in mind, the reactions from other parts of the Twittersphere make more sense. Some people still want him to come clean about the child sexual abuse at CLC. Others are justifiably pissed off at him because their parents read “I Kissed Dating Goodbye” as some sort of manual for purity. They pushed the book on their kids in the late ’90s and early ’00s as THE way to make sure one got into a good marriage without compromising purity. (Seriously, not having sex before marriage was THE MOST IMPORTANT THING, not so many other things that make up a good marriage.) Instead, people ended up in bad marriages without really knowing the other person and lives got very messed up. Harris was also very anti-LGBTQ. His apology in that area is falling on mainly deaf ears.

I’ve been asking people to give Harris the “grace and space” to figure things out. The dude was basically in a high control group—a cult, if you will-for decades and he’s trying to make his way outside of that world now. He needs time. This doesn’t mean I approve of what he’s doing. I do think he has more apologizing to do. But beating up on the guy isn’t going to help. Nor is giving him the left foot of fellowship, as so many Christians are wont to do.

This guy really had some hateful positions against LGBT people and women serving in church positions.

I don’t blame LGBT people for not taking his word for his repentance toward his treatment of them, since he opposed marriage equality, claimed “homosexuality” is a mental disorder and thought they should be locked away from society, &c.

It is noteworthy in that Instagram post (Instagram no longer allows people without accounts there to read public posts, so I can’t see it and the comments) he thanks various Christians and atheists for their understanding, while pointing out other Christians have been hateful to him.

There is still one species of plague locusts in North America. The Rocky Mountain Locust was made extinct by 1902.

The High Plains Locust has not swarmed since the 1930s.

Locust plagues require certain conditions to be met: A bunch of rain causing rapid and massive vegetation growth, followed by crowding of grasshoppers.

Stopping a locust plague requires catching it as it starts (or before). We had an incident here of a budding locust plague which was fought off by the state with biplanes and insecticide.

That said, it’s preferable to kill off locusts with less-damaging methods than insecticides to the environment. Mauritania funded a study which found that a certain fungus will eat through the exoskeleton of a locust and kill it from the inside out. They’ve since exported that research to other countries in Africa.

Since locusts are considered a delicacy in many countries, there is also a problem with spraying versus people eating the locusts. In Saudi Arabia in a recent locust plague, the government had to warn people not to eat the locusts. In Yemen when the government proposed spraying locusts, locals objected.

Pound-for-pound, locusts actually eat only a fraction of the vegetation that cattle do, and provide far more nutrients than beef. They also produce far less methane.

That’s more than you ever wanted to know about eating locusts.

I thought about it, to run against my Republican senator, but he’s very rich and I’m not. The state only pays $12,000 a year for a senator, you’re required to live in Lincoln during the legislative session and maintain a home in your district (four hundred miles away for us). He can afford to do that, I cannot. Therefore I am locked out of running for state government.

Not paying legislators means only rich people can be legislators.

Bypassing Trump, California Reaches Fuel-Efficiency Deal With Automakers (Governing Magazine, a magazine for politicians)

California has struck a deal with four major automakers to boost their vehicles’ fuel-emissions standards, escalating the state’s standoff with the Trump administration over federal efforts to freeze such improvements.

The deal announced Thursday commits the automakers to reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants from their cars and light-duty trucks. That will require an increase in overall mileage to roughly 50 miles per gallon by model year 2026, one year later than fuel-efficiency targets that had been set by President Barack Obama’s administration, which the Trump administration is moving to roll back.

Ford, Honda, BMW of North America and Volkswagen Group of America signed on to the deal with the California Air Resources Board, promising to implement the targets across their entire fleet, regardless of what the federal government does.

I stumped for the referendum locally, which passed in my township. Overall, it went down in flames (why are we paying those lazy no good &c &c).

I have a suspicion Jim Wright is angling for a new blog post from his comment section on Twitter.

For hours people have been commenting on the fifth columnist Christian sects which do not stand up against Evangelical Christian fascists, that being all of them (as such, they are complicit in their silence). Individual Christians do, no church at all has. None.

Numerous people have pointed out that those of us who denied the Holy Spirit (atheists) are condemned by the New Testament to hell as the single unforgivable sin, and no sect, Protestant or Catholic has ever rejected that dogma. (No church can deny that dogma, as that repudiates the New Testament.)

Amongst other notations are such utterances as Pope Francis saying trans people are as dangerous to the family as nuclear weapons. (The Vatican specifically rejects the scientific definition of gender.)

I get confused when I’m using my computer versus using my typewriter. Two spaces? One? Screw it and just start a new line for each sentence?

My former book publisher put out a style rule saying the Oxford comma should not be used. That resulted in every editor and copyeditor in the company saying “no.”

I used to work for a federal contractor. From the CNN article, it looks like the contract got awarded to Amazon, then Oracle protested and took it to Federal court, lost, and now is putting a shit-ton of political pressure on shithead and his gooper minions in Congress to tear up the award. So the winner has been decided in court, but they’re trying to stop the DoD from signing the paperwork to execute the contract.

You’ll need a real expert in the Federal Acquisition Regulations to nail down who has and hasn’t violated what, because we never had to deal with shit this fucked up. All I can say is that in general, the government side of the contracts process is full of people who don’t quite know what they’re doing, who make a bunch of mistakes or show favoritism, but industry ignores a lot of it because they don’t want to piss off their customer too much. When the gloves come off, the contractor legal staff can tear the government to pieces because they’re usually a lot better at it and a lot better staffed. When Amazon files suit again and get discovery of the relevant government documents, I’d expect they’ll find a lot of interesting shit.

My former book publisher put out a style rule saying the Oxford comma should not be used. That resulted in every editor and copyeditor in the company saying “no.”

It is not just a matter of learning a lot of “If x then y” rules, it is a matter of appreciated grammar and the structure of the sentence you are forming (To people who comprehend neither grammar nor sentence structure).

There are no “official” rules in English for when you should use a hyphen.

It is most often used when:

a) separating the syllables of a word
b) breaking a word at the end of a line (LGF does this automatically because Mr. Johnson is very good at what he does)
c) when there is possible confusion over which word is modified by an adjective or adverb (the hyphen attaches it to the word modified)
d) prefixes and suffixes when a first glance does not provide clarity (example, refresh used to have a hyphen but no longer does, however, co-worker is recommended with a hyphen because the eye might be otherwise drawn to a first syllable “cow” which muddles the meaning). Another example is “re-creation” versus “recreation.”
e) Words which people become familiar with will generally lose a hyphen to a closed up style, for example E-mail (which is the way I still write it) from the 1990’s had mostly been altered to email by 2010.

I applied and got a success screen and a claim number. I selected the prepaid card for payment.

I went there a couple days ago. Equifax said my data was compromised and my wife’s wasn’t. (Strange, because I am the joint signature on her accounts.)

I signed up for the credit monitoring rather than $125. Something like Credit Karma requires a cell phone (out of luck here) and damage from identity theft could far exceed that amount.

Lemme preface something here about MD-7. I’ve been there numerous times. I’ve been to the aquarium as a third grade kid. I’ve been to the Power Plant Live to see music. I’ve been to countless Orioles games there. I was born the same year Cummings got elected. Does it have problems? Sure it does but as Victor Blackwell said it is home for people who dream and want the best for their loved ones as any Trump supporting Congressman’s district. My grandparents home district in Pennsylvania has problems too but Trump would never use “infested” or question why anyone would want to live. Trump at his truest form is a bigoted snob who is still the pampered rich kid whose Dad helped him get out of the draft. It wasn’t avoidance by conscience but as with everything in Trump’s life by cowardice and his perception as himself as the pinnacle of human evolution.

I get confused when I’m using my computer versus using my typewriter. Two spaces? One? Screw it and just start a new line for each sentence?

My former book publisher put out a style rule saying the Oxford comma should not be used. That resulted in every editor and copyeditor in the company saying “no.”

Several years ago at my job, we had a huge blowup over one space or two in our reports, to the point that one of my coworkers wrote a report that explained how proportional spacing worked and that we should only have to use one space after a period. It didn’t matter, the boss wanted two spaces. I set up a macro in Word that I’d run after completing a report to insert the required extra space.

As for the Oxford comma, I went to journalism school and we were told not to use it. However, if Rees-Mogg is going to take that position, I’m going to make a point of using the Oxford comma. I don’t want to be like him in *anything*, he’s that repulsive.

I have 2 cousins who are gay: both are affluent and have children who are still at home. Many affluent gays are willing to assume that religious fundamentalism is the necessary price to keep Republicans in power so that they can continue to get their tax cuts. Peter Thiel is a perfect example of how too many wealthy gays figure that their wealth insulates them from backlash and that preserving their money is more important than preserving any rights. Especially in the era of Trump and the GOP, wealth buys rights. Laws apply only to the poor and working class.

As I think about it, it seems racism is the core. It all started to fall apart in the 1950s with Truman integrating the military, the enforcement of desegregation of the south in the 1950s. There’s basically four years between the Civil Rights Act and the onset of republican dominance. The US is full of racists which is depressing but not news. I guess we’ll need an economic collapse or we’re in for a long slide into collapse.

The whole nation was in the midst of a deep depression and the Republican Party was the party in charge when it happened. It wasn’t a situation like 2016 where most of the country was doing well and the stock market was booming — in 1932 the stock market was down 90% from its high in 1929 and the unemployment rate had surged to 25% from 3.2%. That is the type of economic nightmare that can lead to revolution.

People who benefited either directly or indirectly through the New Deal voting for people like Reagan in a landslide. And yes it all goes back to HST deciding loudly that the promise of The New Deal belonged to PoC too. That’s the genesis of modern conservatism since WWII. The old conservatism was more explicitly classist since they weren’t worried about PoC but Truman began to change that.

Plus and Wendell maybe you don’t mean it this way but you can be lacking kids like me, spb, & others here are and still want quality education & investment for children. Plus gays like straight people come in all socioeconomic backgrounds. It comes down to our fundamental values and I’m glad that LGBT people whether like SPB or my cousin whether they don’t have kids or do have kids are generally empathetic people who know which party and ideology is best for the American people.

All true. Aside though from R and D something else happened. Previous the R was the party of the North and D the party of the south. And overnight the D became the party of poor people and R the party of rich people. Not that Rs hadn’t been for the rich since 1890 or so, but in an instant they weren’t the party of the North. And southerners voted for progressives.

Part of the reason that was such a short time period is that Norm Coleman and the republican party kept demanding recount after recount of the election that Al Franken had won.

But even if Franken had been approved in January, the Democrats lost their 60 vote majority effective February 4, 2010, which severely limited what they could accomplish in 2010, given McConnell’s obstructionism and the GOP willingness to support it.

Earlier in the thread there was discussion about gays voting for school funding referendum, even though they didn’t have children. In our neck of the woods (suburban Chicago), there are communities that deliberately put these referendum on ballots when snowbirds are out of town. Many elderly people, whose children are grown and whose grandchildren live elsewhere, don’t see the need to support education for the future in their own communities. So some communities prefer to make it inconvenient for them to vote.

The problem was that we had 60 D senators for only about 4? months and one of those was Lieberman; that limited what we could pass for the good of the country since McConnell insisted on blocking anything Obama proposed. I wonder if McConnell was working for the Russians even back then.

It was actually less than four months, since Ted Kennedy was mostly out of the Senate due to illness.

The Minnesota election went to court due to the close count. The balance when the senators were sworn in was 58-41. Al Franken didn’t swear in until July, 2009. Ted Kennedy was out of the Senate due to brain cancer from May to July, 2008. Sen. Kennedy died in August, 2009.

After that, the special election in Massachusetts saw his seat flip from D to R with Scott Brown.

The whole nation was in the midst of a deep depression and the Republican Party was the party in charge when it happened. It wasn’t a situation like 2016 where most of the country was doing well and the stock market was booming — in 1932 the stock market was down 90% from its high in 1929 and the unemployment rate had surged to 25% from 3.2%. That is the type of economic nightmare that can lead to revolution.

And it pretty much led to right-wing dictatorships in multiple countries with threats of it in many more.

The problem isn’t just the agreement, but the acceptance. You have a vast part of the country that may not exactly agree with the racists holding all the power, but won’t do a thing to go against it long as it doesn’t affect them or they get their good trade offs for it. Both of those times had to be initiated by gov’t action rather than actual ‘will of the people’ , and it’s apparent we’re still basically fighting the same goddamn fights we were in the 60s if only on a lesser scale, and not through lack of fight back from the racists who want to undo all the gains since the CRA. Not to mention timely interventions from the courts, which we will easily not have on our sides in the immediate future.

Parking can be a nightmare in New York City, so one rich man decided to cut corners, literally, to get around it.

Noam Gottesman, a billionaire investor, former hedge fund manager, and ex of Lucy Liu, believed he was above city planning and zoning laws when he decided to illegally cut a fake driveway in front of his home. Gottesman modified the sidewalk next to his Washington Street residence in the West Village, giving the illusion that a driveway exists, the New York Daily News reports. Just another case of rich-ass people doing rich-ass things.

While there are no official street signs showing that the space is barred from other cars, there are yellow warnings printed on black doors of the property, stating “No Parking” and “Active Driveway,” which are both ruses made to scare off someone looking for a spot. The purpose of the fake driveway is to deter neighbors from parking their cars in the space, ensuring that Gottesman always has a spot and deliveries can be made to his home without difficulty.

One such neighbor, Eyal Levin, said he had been battling with the sidewalk drama for more than three years. In May, as an act of rebellion, he parked his car in the spot, only to find it towed to a lot in Queens. He had to pay around $200 to get it back. Once he got to his car, he found a sloppily written parking ticket for $95 signed by an NYPD officer. The city threw out the ticket since the police officer didn’t fill out the forms correctly. Levin called Gottesman’s sidewalk regime “a scam” and said it was “outrageous to put that sign up when you have this huge mansion.”

Forbes says Gottesman has assets of $2.7billion. As a money-hoarder, he has nothing better to do than harass his neighbours so he can have an illegal reserved space.

Speaking at a primary school in Cyprus back in June, the bishop warned about what he believes is a cause of homosexuality. According to him, women who enjoy anal sex during pregnancy risk transferring homosexuality to their fetuses, the Cyprus Mail reports.

“[Saint Porfyrios] says that when the woman enjoys that, a desire is created, and then the desire is passed on to the child,” the Greek Orthodox leader said, referring to a saint who reportedly advised gay people to abstain from sex and pray for their sexuality to be reversed.

As video of the Bishop’s words went viral on social media this week, a representative of the Cypriot LGBT rights group ACCEPT commented, “How are lesbians created?”

He would not accept Canadian licenses are valid in the USA, and claimed she had no proper identification (she showed digital copies on her phone of her Canadian passport, Nexus card, and birth certificate).

At the police station, CBC reports, she was charged with speeding and driving without a license, and told she had to pay an $880 bond, or else stay in jail for two months until the court appearance. She also reportedly had to pay $200 to get her car out of the impound lot.

Once the story blew up, the sheriff’s department tried to backpedal, claiming “the media is trying to make this a story about a war on Canadians, when we’re trying to make war on speeders.”

Have stories among friends about this from years ago including one’s father who told them to lock them up since that would cost the jurisdiction money feeding him and keeping a deputy on hand to oversee the jail while he was in it.

We have “county islands”, that is, 55+ communities inside city limits but outside the city and school districts. Personally, I hate “county islands” in general because they’re outside the tax base, but I am amused at the pot dispensaries which have opened up within this very conservative, Mormon-dominated city because they’re actually on county islands.

Have stories among friends about this from years ago including one’s father who told them to lock them up since that would cost the jurisdiction money feeding him and keeping a deputy on hand to oversee the jail while he was in it.

There’s a former incorporated town in Texas called Iowa Colony. It is near Highway 288 between Houston and Lake Jackson.

The town decided to raise money by extending several threads of the town to cover a few yards of SR-288 in several places, then put its town cops on the highway to catch people from out-of-town.

The stink got so bad over that, the state of Texas forcibly took away their municipal court. (State law says a town may only earn a maximum of 30% of its budget from traffic tickets.)

While no one should be speeding (ducks for doing 95 on I-76 in Colorado in my Smart), the way the Canadian was treated in Georgia was uncalled for.

It might be a typo because when making a list after each item is a comma. Usually there is a comma before the “and.” ( ,and)

ahem….there’s a comma, then a space, THEN the and.

We have “county islands”, that is, 55+ communities inside city limits but outside the city and school districts. Personally, I hate “county islands” in general because they’re outside the tax base, but I am amused at the pot dispensaries which have opened up within this very conservative, Mormon-dominated city because they’re actually on county islands.

Yikes on the Mormons. When I lived in Liberty, Mo., I lived one block from the old Liberty Jail/Mormon Church.

Frequently the folks in Salt Lake City would send people to Liberty for missionary training. The church knew who the atheist was a couple buildings away, so I was constantly running them off my property.

I only lived there for about a year; a tornado destroyed my house (which I had just gotten into with friends) and made me homeless (again).

Several years ago at my job, we had a huge blowup over one space or two in our reports, to the point that one of my coworkers wrote a report that explained how proportional spacing worked and that we should only have to use one space after a period. It didn’t matter, the boss wanted two spaces. As for the Oxford comma, I went to journalism school and we were told not to use it.

Back in the 1980s my wife was director of the Ford Employe Fitness Center in Dearborn, that’s right, “employe” without the double e ending. Ford HQ tried for years and years to get everyone to drop the extra e because someone had projected that could save them money.

Didn’t take. 🤔

I believe so.

nobody’s image can be used for profit without their consent. you need a consent form. (this is why college players can’t have their images used in ncaa football video games anymore. someone rightly sued over it). nor can you use someone else’s art in something that you are doing that involves making money, without their consent. I think it was Ford that learned that the hard way when they got sued by a Detroit artist whose work was on exhibition in a building they decided to use for a car shoot. technically, you can use pictures of people in art exhibits without needing their consent, if they are in public, which I think is the reason why street photographers are able to make a living without having to carry a ream of consent forms around with them. lawyers, I am correct on this, yes?

I can only assume that they started to grow affluent and take things for granted while the bosses kept working on convincing them that less regulation means more jobs

the union jobs mostly went away. the comfortable middle class populations that used to send kids off to college so they could come back and have comfortable middle-management jobs in the factories turned into wastelands, like London’s worst early twentieth-century ghettos. Now, the people who live in those towns are mostly broken, hollow men living lives of absolute despair. they don’t think trump is going to save them. they think he’s the equivalent of a professional wrestling match—someone they can turn into their babe as he fights his way through the heels. they won’t desert him because they never actually bought into him. they are just people drowning, trying to pull at least one other person down with them on the way.

The problem is what American conservatism is. It’s a philosophy of exclusion. Yes they have lgbt, poc, women but what unites conservative ideology is a huge fuck you, I got mine mentality. DimJim spent the Obama years trashing Obama. Obama who was the first President to really champion the rights of lgbt people. He’s getting married thanks to a decision that opposition to was a virtue and still is to Republican voters. He’ll iirc Jim even trashed Obergfell.

conservatism is not a philosophy or an ideology. it is a counter argument to liberalism, which has been the dominant ideology in the west since the early part of the nineteenth century. the reason why conservatism seems to be devoid of any actual ideas is because its entire rationale is concerned with opposition to liberal positions. what makes it even more complicated is that modern American conservatism isn’t conservatism at all. It’s reactionism. it’s the populist “know nothing” tearing up of democracy by its roots. and at the moment, it’s succeeding. in order to stop it, i regret to have to say that millions of people are likely going to have to die. we’re literally going to have to have things become so bad that somebody decides to start taking large numbers of dumb fucks and standing them up against a wall.
